Tips for Putting on Six Distinct Kinds of Eyeliner

Introduction

For us, eyeliner is the finishing touch to any makeup routine. Eyeliner completes an eye makeup look like no other product can, whether it’s smeared and smoky, winged eyeliner, a flawless cat eye, or barely there. It’s that last bit of polish that makes the whole thing feel complete. It’s true that with enough time, effort, and dedication, anyone can get their desired liner appearance, regardless of their eye shape, amount of experience, or talent. So, if you’ve ever botched a cat eye (or more), we’re here to reassure you that all is not lost. Every great makeup artist has fought with making those pesky wings blend in properly at one point or another. Are you prepared to master the art of applying eyeliner? Follow this link for a comprehensive tutorial on using each type of eyeliner you can think of, from pencils to liquids to creams.

How Many Different Kinds of Eyeliner Are There?

There are five distinct categories of eyeliner, but before we get into those, let’s take a quick look back at the product’s illustrious past, starting with the original sort. The history of eyeliner is almost as lengthy and varied as the history of the people who use it, spanning from ancient Egyptian times on the banks of the Nile to the sharply defined lashlines of the Roaring Twenties and the present cat-eye styles of the catwalk. Ancient Egyptians, for instance, utilized kohl to rim their eyelids, a substance now used in modern eyeliner applications.

After centuries of development, modern kohl liners have branched out from the original lead-based formulation employed by ancient Egyptians to offer a dizzying array of different options for defining the eyes. Liquid eyeliner, cream liner, gel liner, kohl liner, and pencil liner are the five most common types of eyeliner, but their packaging may differ.

Learn how to draw these six gorgeous eyeliner styles

1. A smoky eyeliner look

To create this look, use your finger to smudge the eyeliner along the top and bottom lash lines. Next, drag the tip of a small brush or your ring finger through the color on the outer corners of your eyes, then draw a straight line up to the crease.

2. An easy wing

To create this look, start by lining your upper lash line as usual with liquid or gel liner. Then take an angled brush and drag it over the edge of your lid to soften and blend out any harsh lines that might have been made by applying too much product at once. Try adding one more coat of liner on top for extra drama.

3. A sharper, more defined line

Using a very sharp eyeliner pencil (like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils), apply a very thin line from corner to corner along your upper lash line and let it set for about 30 seconds before applying another coat just above it to build up thickness as desired.

4. A grungier, dramatic look

If you want to go for a grungier look, try smudging your eyeliner at the top lash line and lower lash line, then smearing it along the bottom lash line. In other words, create a messy, smoky eye look by using a dark brown or black eye pencil as a base, then smudging it with a brush or your finger until it looks like you just woke up from a nap and forgot to clean off your face!

5. A soft, smudgy eye

The best way to achieve this look is by using a creamy pencil in a deep brown shade that’s similar to your natural eye color. Apply the pencil along the upper lash line and smudge it out with your finger. Then apply a little mascara on both top and bottom lashes for added drama. This look works best for people with naturally thick eyelashes, who won’t have to worry about clumps or getting mascara on their eye lids.

6. A crisp cat-eye

Line your lower lid from corner to corner with black liquid liner, then draw a small triangle at the outer corner of each eye. Make sure your cat-eye is straight across the lash line — if not, try drawing two triangles instead of one so you don’t end up with two crooked lines when you connect them together at the outer corners of each eye (see picture above). Once you’ve got both eyes lined up, fill in any gaps with black shadow.
